Dual Role: Internal Auditor and Corporate Controller – Topicus.com

Topicus.com (“TDC”) is currently looking for a high-potential candidate to fill a dual role as Internal Auditor (75%) and Corporate Controller (25%) to support and enhance the Internal Audit team in the Netherlands. This role offers a solid foundation for advancing into senior Finance positions, either within the Netherlands, at our headquarters, or in one of our international operations.

TDC offers a unique position as Corporate Internal Auditor with some tasks and responsibilities as Corporate Controller.

To clarify:

Internal Auditor (75%)

  • Independently plan, coordinate and execute risk-based audit assignments (e.g. key control audits, review of balance sheets of acquired entities, themed audits)
  • Validate the compliance with Financial, IT and Legal policies and procedures
  • Reporting of internal audit findings through audit reports and presentations
  • Proactively provide (un)asked advise to improve quality and compliance within the team and throughout the organization

Corporate Controller (25%)

  • Support the monthly close process and the preparation of financial reports for quarterly stock exchange reporting.
  • Contribute to the preparation of accurate and timely statutory financial statements in accordance with Dutch GAAP.
  • Manage, oversee, and actively participate in various financial projects throughout the organization.

Stakeholders: MT and CEO/CFO, Manager Internal Audit, Head of Corporate Controller, country finance management & finance teams.

Your time spend will be organisized as:

  • 50% risk-based audit assignments
  • 15% reporting and presenting internal audit findings
  • 10% projects
  • 25% Corporate Control

You report to the Manager Internal Audit, work closely with other Internal Auditors, Corporate Controllers, and communicate with stakeholders.

Who are you?

We are looking for a strong financial with a goal-oriented & agile mindset. You have a good technical background, strong communication skills and a can-do approach. You are able to build strong relationships and can liaise with, challenge and motivate internal and external stakeholders.

  • Master degree in the field of Accounting, Finance, Economics, maybe supplemented with a Post-Master qualification (RA, RC, CIA, CPA, ACCA, or equivalent)
  • 3-5 years relevant working experience in Audit and/or Controlling at a renowned accounting firm
  • Willingness to travel on average 2-4 times per quarter, including international travel
  • Excellent communication skills in English. Good interpersonal skills and ability to quickly form working relationships and gain credibility. A clear, to-the-point communicator with a practical, no-nonsense mentality

Detailed Description

The Internal Auditor/Corporate Controller at TDC is part of the Corporate Control team and will be based at TDC's headquarters in Utrecht. You will report to the Manager of Internal Audit and work closely together with the Head of Corporate Control.

In this role, you will be responsible for the timely planning and execution of internal audits, which include substantive testing of financial statement line items, assessing internal controls, and supporting other audit-related projects. Beyond financial reviews, you will evaluate operational practices, recommend improvements for internal controls, and assist management in achieving compliance with relevant standards.

In addition to your role as Internal Auditor, as Corporate Controller, you will manage, oversee, and actively contribute to a variety of financial activities/projects within the organization. The scope of these responsibilities and the distribution of workload will be coordinated in consultation with the Manager of Internal Audit and the Head of Corporate Control.

Once this position is filled, the TDC Corporate Control team will consist of 10 FTEs, including 4 mainly dedicated to Internal Audit.

Future career growth opportunities could include roles within Finance, M&A, or direct business support, with potential progression into managerial positions.

Job Responsibilities Internal Audit

  • Responsible for the development, implementation and maintaining/continuously improving the audit methodology and supporting templates for all aspects of the audit process ensuring consistency with group practices and compliance with professional standards in collaboration with the Manager Internal Audit and Head of Corporate Control;
  • Independently plan and execute risk-based audit assignments;
  • Testing the appropriateness of the design, implementation and operational effectiveness of key controls related to the (financial) risks at the BUs;
  • Review (validity and completeness) of balance sheets of acquired entities within 180 days post-acquisition as well as themed based substantive audits (e.g. WIP, Deferred Revenue);
  • Validate the compliance with Financial, IT and Legal policies and procedures;
  • Reporting of internal audit findings through audit reports and presentations;
  • Liaise with and influence people of all levels and culture backgrounds (incl. management) on financial, reporting, and other issues;
  • Provide independent assurance to the local management on the standards of control;
  • Follow up on and manage remediation of open audit findings;
  • Assess business processes, procedures, and methodologies to improve operational efficiencies and mitigate risk;
  • Other ad-hoc operational analysis, special projects as they arise.

Job Responsibilities Corporate Control

The scope of these responsibilities and the distribution of workload will be coordinated in consultation with the Manager of Internal Audit, Head of Corporate Control and Corporate Controller. Engagement in the following work is expected:

  • Provide critical support during the monthly close process by ensuring all financial data is accurately recorded and reconciled, facilitating the timely preparation of financial reports required for quarterly stock exchange filings. This includes working closely with various departments to gather necessary information, resolve discrepancies, and ensure compliance with reporting standards.
  • Assist in the preparation of statutory financial statements, ensuring they are completed accurately and on time, in full compliance with Dutch GAAP. This involves detailed analysis and review of financial data, coordination with external auditors, and ensuring that all regulatory and statutory requirements are met.
  • Lead, manage, and contribute to a range of financial (improvement) projects across the organization.
